GRH GOES PAPER-FREE
So – here it is. The replacement for the GRH NEWSLETTER that was printed on paper and delivered to your door.
And the new name is GRH – ON YOUR DOORSTEP
The original was printed four times a year but GRH- OYD will be available only when there’s something to say. It might be things of interest happening in one of our three streets OR as before it might be news of a GRH event.
And this first OYD has a lot to say……
BUT WILL OUR PARKING PLACES BE AFFECTED ?
WILL A NEARBY PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT AFFECT THE PARKING RIGHTS OF RESIDENTS IN HOLLY WALK, GENTLEMAN’S ROW AND RIVER VIEW ?
The question arises because of the two new housing blocks that are to replace the recently demolished Megaswitch building on the opposite side of Chase Green Gardens at the end of Gentleman’s Row.
One is four stories high and the other is five stories and together they will provide 78 one, two and three bedroomed units. The development will include a new public thoroughfare linking Old Park Avenue with the New River and the plan is to ‘create high quality apartments.’
Work has already begun but how will it affect GRH residents ? The GRH committee has already contacted Enfield Council asking the question, ‘Where will the new residents park their cars?’
The answers we got were surprising and quite interesting:
We were firstly told:
This is a no-car development.
It was also explained that:
Residents have no access to Town CPZ parking permits
As the two buildings take shape this will obviously be a continuing story which we will be following………...
GRH CAMPAIGN FOR BARNEY’S BRIDGE GETS A POSITIVE YES FROM COUNCIL
SUCCESS! AFTER OVER 400 RESIDENTS AND LOCALS SIGNED THE GRH PETITION THE COUNCIL HAVE AGREED TO NAME THE BRIDGE BETWEEN GENTLEMAN’S ROW AND RIVER VIEW AFTER THE STREETS MOST FAMOUS CAT
The campaign to have a bridge named after Barney the cat was first suggested by two residents of River View. The actual campaign started in July when GRH became involved and started a petition that collected 186 signatures on River View and an additional 313 from an On-Line petition.
Barney was popular for years and well known by the community and people that used River View as part of their journey to school, to work or to catch a train. When Barney died 157messages of condolence were emailed to ‘Enfield Love Your Doorstep’
The petition included details of why residents thought one of the bridges should be named after a cat. By then Barney was also on a mural in Palace Gardens Shopping Centre and, only a few weeks ago, he appeared in a permanent mural on Enfield Chase Station.
The campaign was backed by GRH Residents Committee, the hugely important Enfield Society, members of the Jephcott family (one of the other bridges is named after Chris Jephcott) Councillor Mike Rye and other Councillors from Town Ward.
BBC London News on Radio London and Television News on BBC 1 covered the story when the Council agreed to go ahead with the naming. Listen to the radio interview here or watch the BBC news item here.
An on-site meeting with GRH and the Council has been held to discuss what the next step is and what the Barney’s Bridge sign should look like.
Meanwhile, GRH would like to say a Big Thank You to all those people that signed the petition to support Barney’s Bridge.
COUNCIL TURNS OVER A NEW LEAF
A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO A COMBINATION OF HEAVY RAIN AND PILES OF LEAVES TURNED PART OF GENTLEMAN’S ROW INTO A DANGEROUS PATH. WE REPORTED IT TO THE COUNCIL.
It started with the pathway on Gentleman’s Row between Archway House and Registry Office and several years of rotten, unswept leaves. We wrote to the ‘Operational Manager for Street Cleaning’
The reply we got stated, ‘The supervisor for this area found it to be of a satisfactory standard’. We then sent several daily photographs and a video film of the still untouched wet and sodden leaves.
Three days later Street-Sweepers came, swept Gentleman’s Row BUT completely ignored the complained about area Archway House to the Registry Office.
Another Video was sent followed by the Council response ’After a thorough inspection of Gentleman’s Row by the Senior Chargehand it was determined that this area meets our standards for litter control’
This missed the point that we were making. We had no complaints about litter control. The soggy leaves had continued to get wet and make a very slippy surface on which to walk. (A man in his mid 70’s had slipped and fallen on a nearby pavement a few days earlier).
Councillor Mike Rye recommended a formal complaint via the Council’s website. The rotting leaves were removed three days later.
The Operation’s Manager wrote saying, ’I was totally unaware of this pedestrian walkway. Once I became aware of the alleyway and the condition I asked the team to monitor and maintain the required standards.’
LET’S HOPE THAT THE GOOD WORK CONTINUES. !
JUST A FIVE MINUTE WALK TO PRIZE WINNING RESTAURANT
It’s long been GRH’s favourite Enfield restaurant and a meal for two was even a prize at the July Summer Party. But now MARCUS RESTAURANT & BAR Church Street has been voted the ‘Best Italian Restaurant’ in the South East presented by Qualita Italiana.
The combination of ‘prize winning restaurant’ and ‘just a short walk’ combine to make it well worth a visit.
COMING UP……..
Last year almost 40 residents from The Walk, The View and The Row joined in with the GRH Annual Carol Singing Event. Each year it’s followed with a complimentary drink and light Christmas Buffet at the Cricketers pub.
